On Thursday, July 10th, the film “Samir Mehić Bouwie – Letters from Srebrenica”, produced by the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was screened at NGO Hub.

This docudrama takes us through the personal story of Samir Mehić, a rock musician who was the only one among his friends and bandmates to remain in Srebrenica during the siege. Through an exchange of letters with Faruk, a friend who had left the city earlier, the film reveals a story of lost youth, love for music, friendship, fear, and hope.

“I longed for you like salt, though there is bread, there is everything,” writes Samir to his friend Faruk. This simple yet profound sentence highlights the hardship of life in a besieged city and the emotional consequences of war that do not fade.

The film reminds us that collective remembrance is not just an act of commemoration, but also an act of confrontation — necessary for regional reconciliation and building lasting peace. It is a process that requires the courage to look in the mirror as a society.

After the screening, attendees participated in an informal discussion, sharing their feelings and reflections. The evening concluded with a joint visit to the commemorative art performance by Women in Black at Republic Square in Belgrade.

We thank everyone who was part of this important event.
