The discussions focused on recommendations that the Youth Initiative for Human Rights, together with civil society organizations from the Western Balkans, formulated during 2025 as part of the Civil Society Forum, a side event preceding the Berlin Process Summit. The recommendations are intended for the governments of Western Balkan countries, international organizations, local civil society organizations, the European Commission and EU member states, partner countries of the Berlin Process, as well as regional and international bodies.
Branimir Đurović, a YIHR researcher, spoke with young people about the Berlin Process, its significance, and its results, while Marko Milosavljević, Head of Research and Advocacy, presented the key recommendations for reconciliation and dealing with the past. During the discussion, high school and university students from minority communities shared their views on these recommendations and possible ways to implement them in Serbia.
During both discussions, which were attended by a total of 40 young people, participants proposed a wide range of ways these recommendations could be implemented through intensive discussion and collaborative work. Participants in Preševo and Novi Pazar discussed ideas for new formats of exchange programs, language learning, cultural festivals, educational workshops, as well as proposals for new memorials dedicated to victims of the conflicts of the 1990s.
The discussions were organized with the support of the British Council as part of the project “Advocacy and Implementation of the Civil Society Forum Recommendations within the Berlin Process Summit 2025.”
