{"id":8425,"date":"2018-07-28T18:34:58","date_gmt":"2018-07-28T17:34:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yihr.rs\/?p=8425"},"modified":"2020-02-11T18:35:26","modified_gmt":"2020-02-11T17:35:26","slug":"by-responding-to-the-politics-of-crime-promoted-by-radeta-and-seselj-vucic-and-brnabic-should-explain-what-is-their-vision-of-serbia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yihr.rs\/en\/by-responding-to-the-politics-of-crime-promoted-by-radeta-and-seselj-vucic-and-brnabic-should-explain-what-is-their-vision-of-serbia\/","title":{"rendered":"By Responding to the Politics of Crime Promoted by Radeta and \u0160e\u0161elj, Vu\u010di\u0107 and Brnabi\u0107 Should Explain What is Their Vision of Serbia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week, such expression of evil is summarized in Monday\u2019s tweet of Vjerica Radeta, who, triumphing over the death of Hatid\u017ea Mehmedovi\u0107, president of the Mothers of Srebrenica Association, repeated old Radicals\u2019 mantras that the said association was \u201ca business association\u201d and that Hatid\u017ea\u2019s sons and husband were actually alive regardless of the fact that their remains had been found in several mass graves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that respect, YIHR maintains its previous requests. We demand <\/span><b>that the National Assembly and the Members of Parliament<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terminate the MP status of Vojislav \u0160e\u0161elj as convicted war criminal;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terminate the MP status and all parliamentary duties of Vjerica Radeta;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change the Declaration on Srebrenica by naming the crime in Srebrenica for what it is \u2013 genocide.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amend Article 387, Paragraph 5 of the Criminal Code of Serbia in order to prohibit the denial of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide as established in verdicts of all international courts, including the current ones, as well as the work of the Nurnberg court, and not only when they are established in final and enforceable decisions of the courts in Serbia and the International Criminal Court.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We demand<\/span><b> that the Republican Prosecutor\u2019s Office <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">initiate criminal proceedings against Vjerica Radeta and Vojislav \u0160e\u0161elj based on their public statements since the beginning of 2018, especially having in mind Vjerica Radeta\u2019s tweet of July 23 and Vojislav \u0160e\u0161elj\u2019s participation in TV show \u201cCyrillic\u201d at the Happy Television titled \u201cTruth and Myth about Srebrenica \u2013 23 years later\u201d on July 9, 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We demand that <\/span><b>President of Serbia Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107 and Prime Minister Ana Brnabi\u0107<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clearly state whether they are supporting what is said in Vjerica Radeta\u2019s tweet and, if not, to express respect for the fight of victims\u2019 families for truth and justice about the Srebrenica genocide, the fight fought by Hatid\u017ea Mehmedovi\u0107 till the end of her life. There is no a third way. Remaining silent or ignoring such behavior and statements do not mean being neutral, but amount to tacit support which is heard very loudly and which opens additional room for the glorification of crime and impunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although this act was publicly condemned by Minister <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rasim Ljaji<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u0107, whose political party proposed that one street in Novi Pazar should be named after Hatid\u017ea Mehmedovi\u0107, as well as by Minister <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zorana Mihajlovi\u0107<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and President of National Assembly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maja Gojkovi\u0107<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we believe that the condemnation of the disrespect for victims must be accompanied by clear condemnation by the Prime Minister Brnabi\u0107, as well as by President Vu\u010di\u0107, because it was Hatid\u017ea Mehmedovi\u0107 who welcomed him in Srebrenica on July 11, 2015 and symbolically gave him the Flower of Srebrenica as a <\/span><b>The absence of urgent reaction of the Prosecutor\u2019s Office and Justice Minister, as well as of Prime Minister and President of the Republic, was used by Vojislav \u0160e\u0161elj on Friday to relativise&nbsp; Radeta\u2019s tweet and then to call the Mothers of Srebrenica \u201cswines\u201d and announce that he would \u201c<\/b><b>fight fiercely against Radeta\u2019s recall<\/b><b>\u201d. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symbol of remembrance of the victims.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YIHR welcomes the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proposal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Democratic Party MPs who request the recall of Vjerica Radeta from the position of the Vice President of the National Assembly of Serbia due to hate speech, as well as the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">request<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of an LDP MP not to hold sessions of the Parliament until Radeta resigns or is recalled from all parliamentary duties. Further, YIHR supports the requests of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belgrade Centre for Human Rights<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women in Black<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to criminally prosecute Radeta for the incitement of national, racial and religious hatred and for racial and other discrimination. As a reminder, after managing to escape justice for three years in spite of international wanted-notices, Vjerica&nbsp; Radeta and Petar Joji\u0107 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are awaiting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trial for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charges<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that include threatening, intimidating, offering bribery and otherwise tampering two witnesses at the trial against Vojislav \u0160e\u0161elj. By the decision of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), the case was passed on to the judicial authorities of Serbia, but the final decision of IRMCT is pending upon the appeal of the Prosecutor\u2019s Office, which objected the trial in Serbia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this tweet, as well as numerous declarations by Vojislav \u0160e\u0161elj, does not amount to hate speech only, but hate speech as a means to deny the Srebrenica genocide,&nbsp; which is still normal in public discourse in Serbia, since the article of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Criminal Code of Serbia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is supposed to criminalize the denial and promotion of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, is non-applicable in this case, as it does not refer to the ICTY verdicts which established genocide in Srebrenica in 14 cases.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YIHR reminds that the said Vjerica Radeta\u2019s tweet is not an isolated incident, but a peak of the campaign waged by the Serbian Radical Party, under the leadership of Vojislav \u0160e\u0161elj, since its beginnings and especially since April 11 this year, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when \u0160e\u0161elj was effectively convicted of war crimes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Thus he and his party are using every opportunity (from Hrtkovci, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the \u201cMiredita-dobar dan\u201d festival<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, through the review of the proceedings against the Prime Minister \u0110in\u0111i\u0107\u2019s assassins, the commemoration of Srebrenica and judgment for the rebellion of the Special Operations Unit) to reaffirm the regime criminal practice in Serbian society, using hate speech to deny crimes committed in war. Even more intimidating is tacit support of the governing coalition which either keeps silent in the manner of Vulin\u2019s \u201csilent pride\u201d or reacts mildly and sporadically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We demand that current executive authorities clearly condemn war crimes and those who deny them.
