In January 2017, at a panel organized by the ruling <\/span>Serbian Progressive Party <\/b>in Be\u0161ka, a small town in Vojvodina, YIHR activists attempted to draw attention to state support to \u0160ljivan\u010danin, <\/span>sentenced to 10 years of prison by The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia<\/b>. When it was \u0160ljivan\u010danin\u2019s turn to speak, the activists revealed a banner stating \u201cWar criminals should be silent so that victims could be heard\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

A year and nine months later, they were sentenced by the Misdemeanor Appellate Court for disturbing the peace with their protest against a convicted war criminal. <\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

By protesting against Veselin \u0160ljivan\u010danin we have drawn the public\u2019s attention to the problematic promotions of convicted war criminals and the political legitimization of their crimes. Crime must never be the norm, and those who committed them and deny them must not be glorified. <\/span><\/p>\n

Last Friday, Ratko Mladi\u0107, a war criminal sentenced to life imprisonment, made an appearance on live television.<\/b> A few days prior, Prime Minister Brnabi\u0107 denied the genocide in Srebrenica in an <\/span>interview<\/span><\/a> for Deutsche Welle, stating that \u201cthe horrible massacre in Srebrenica was not a genocide\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

A week earlier, the Ministry of Defence held a book promotion of Vladimira Lazarevi\u0107\u2019s and Neboj\u0161e Pavkovi\u0107\u2019s books, both of whom are convicted war criminals. <\/b><\/p>\n

In April, Vojislav \u0160e\u0161elj was convicted of persecuting Croatians in Vojvodina. <\/span>He remains a member of Parliament, contrary to Serbian law which states that his mandate should end upon conviction<\/b>. <\/b><\/p>\n

These events are only a fragment of a much larger practice of glorifying war criminals and placing them in the spotlight in public spaces. <\/span><\/p>\n

Genocide denial and denying war crimes is unacceptable. We view each war criminal\u2019s promotion as an indication that their crimes can be repeated. <\/b><\/p>\n
