{"id":20285,"date":"2026-06-10T11:30:28","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T10:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yihr.rs\/?p=20285"},"modified":"2026-06-10T11:30:28","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T10:30:28","slug":"yihr-launches-war-past-and-facts-program-with-five-day-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yihr.rs\/en\/yihr-launches-war-past-and-facts-program-with-five-day-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"YIHR Launches \u201cWar Past and Facts\u201d Program with Five-Day Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A group of eight young researchers had the opportunity, during the five-day workshop, to acquire fundamental knowledge about the breakup of Yugoslavia, the armed conflicts and war crimes of the 1990s, and the role of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY), i.e., Serbia, in these conflicts through judicially established facts from the judgment against Jovica Stani\u0161i\u0107 and Franko Simatovi\u0107 Frenki. Participants also learned about key concepts of international law and the work of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), while developing practical skills and tools for independent research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The workshop opened with a lecture by historian Dragan Popovi\u0107, who discussed with participants the causes of the breakup of former Yugoslavia and the key events that preceded the outbreak of armed conflicts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the second day, Assistant Professor Janja Simenti\u0107 Popovi\u0107 and Research Associate Goran Sandi\u0107 from the Faculty of Political Sciences delivered a lecture on the basic concepts and principles of international humanitarian and criminal law. Branimir \u0110urovi\u0107, a researcher at the Youth Initiative for Human Rights, then spoke with participants about the establishment, work, and challenges of the ICTY.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20277\" src=\"https:\/\/yihr.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/260603-YIHR-Predrag-Petrovic-Foto-e1781087323832.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third day of the workshop focused on Serbia\u2019s security services from the end of the Second World War to the present day. Predrag Petrovi\u0107, Director of Research at the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy, presented the complex development of these institutions, with particular emphasis on their role during the 1990s, as well as the contemporary context of their activities amid state capture processes and the repressive suppression of mass civic protests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the fourth day, Jovana Kolari\u0107, a researcher at the Humanitarian Law Center, presented the role of Jovica Stani\u0161i\u0107 and Franko Simatovi\u0107 Frenki in the armed conflicts and crimes committed across the territory of the former Yugoslavia. Marko Milosavljevi\u0107, Head of Research and Advocacy at the Youth Initiative for Human Rights, spoke about Serbian paramilitary formations during the 1990s and their connections with the institutions of the Republic of Serbia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the final day of the workshop, Jovana Kolari\u0107 conducted a training session on searching and navigating ICTY court records. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants reflected on the information they had received and the knowledge they had gained throughout the program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the next phase of the \u201cWar Past and Facts\u201d program, the eight young researchers will, drawing on the knowledge and skills they have acquired, write research papers with mentoring and editorial support on the role of Serbia in the armed conflicts in the former Yugoslavia.
