{"id":20042,"date":"2026-04-18T10:24:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T09:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yihr.rs\/?p=20042"},"modified":"2026-04-18T10:24:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T09:24:08","slug":"violence-in-serbia-must-stop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yihr.rs\/en\/violence-in-serbia-must-stop\/","title":{"rendered":"Violence in Serbia Must Stop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While representatives of the authorities call for dialogue, police and parapolice forces, despite the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2026\/04\/serbia-turk-says-erosion-civic-space-very-worrying\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appeal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, continue to stifle the freedoms and rights of government critics. We point out the continued use of excessive police force, this time against citizens who peacefully demonstrated in front of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Belgrade on the evening of April 16 due to suspected irregularities during the counting of votes in the elections for members of the Student Parliament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The intervention of the police followed after one person from the group led by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nova.rs\/vesti\/drustvo\/studenti-fpn-a-u-blokadi-bojan-borovcanin-ispred-medicinskog-uhvatio-kolegu-davuda-za-vrat-i-udario-ga-u-predelu-arkade\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bojan Borov\u010danin <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">broke the glass in the building of the Faculty of Medicine. Borov\u010danin then attacked student Davud Delime\u0111ac, who asked him if he was ashamed of what the group he led had done. Borov\u010danin is a member of the National Corporate Security Association and a frequent guest of the pro-regime TV Informer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We draw attention to the fact that after the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yihr.rs\/en\/violence-during-voting-day-on-local-elections-in-serbia-must-be-severely-punished\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">violence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the local elections, the practice of intimidation of opposition representatives continued, an example being the threats addressed to Peter \u010cervenek, councilor of the Green Left Front from Ba\u010dka Topola. On April 16, a message was left on the door of his apartment that convicted war criminal Ratko Mladi\u0107 is a hero. Such threats have the authority&#8217;s signature if one takes into account the continuous glorification of Mladi\u0107 and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yihr.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/WEB-ENG-Stanje-poricanja-2024.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">denial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the crimes for which he was convicted, as shown by the recent announcement by the Minister of Justice, Nenad Vuji\u0107, who calls Mladi\u0107 a general, but not a war criminal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On April 17, the Movement for the People and the State based in Nis falsely accused our alumni Mateja Nikoli\u0107 of attacking Professor Aleksandra Zarubica. In a public place, Nikoli\u0107 asked Professor Zarubica if she was ashamed of participating in the formation of the illegal Faculty of Serbian Studies in Nis. The Movement for the People and the State argues that he was a participant at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/summit.yihr.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youth Summit,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a regional gathering of young people that we have been organizing for more than 15 years.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These examples of violence and threats, along with the suppression of independent media, pressure on the judiciary and trampling on the autonomy of universities, aim to intimidate citizens, especially young people who have raised their voices against crime and corruption in the context of the upcoming early parliamentary elections.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>That is why we ask the prosecutor&#8217;s office in Serbia to urgently take all the necessary actions in order to finally stop the violence in Serbia, while we request the Protector of Citizens to review the actions of the police.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Youth Initiative for Human Rights once again draws the attention of the domestic and international public to the increase in the number of cases of threats, physical and verbal violence to which rebellious citizens, especially students and representatives of opposition political parties in Serbia, have been exposed in recent days.
